Paddles, Floggers and Whips

Peter wrote: On the presumption that a whip in this context is a single braided device tapering along it's length, I have a single specimen about two metres (6ft 8 in) long and is used regularly with my spanking partner. There is also a range of floggers with tines (or falls) of various thicknesses in my collection, some of which are as severe as a whip. The sole experience of tying to a tree was some years ago, when my spanking partner at the time, loved being tied to trees, the rougher the better. No similar experience since.

My knowledge of whips is limited. I showed pictures of two mean-looking whips. I have never seen such whips in real life. I imagine they would be worse on the bottom than a bunch of switches. I also showed two pictures of how bottoms might look after they were lightly used.

Peter, our knowledgeable reader from across the pond, informs us.

A multi-tailed implement, such as that pictured, over here is called a flogger or martinet (from the French for small whip). I have a large collection of various lengths and thicknesses of leather strands, plus one with horsehair and another with rubber cord. They are popular with the ladies here. Those with long strands need plenty of practice!

Martinet, yes, now I recall. I recall reading that they were generally available from shops like apothecaries. We had a small flogger with rubber cord. Ideal for pussy whipping.

One reader went off on flogging in the Royal Navy. Not even close to the ballpark.

I once used a single-tail whip (quirt) that was in the toy chest of a woman. She rode horses and bought it at a tack shop.  She was eager for me to use it on her. I slapped it on my leg and immediately knew that was a mistake. I told her she was crazy, but she still wanted me to use it on her. I did. It left marks with little effort on my part.

We have several floggers. The leather on two of them is almost as soft as Charmin and feels sensuous. A half dozen gals would lie nude on a king-size bed to be flogged by several guys with floggers like these.

Almost as soft as Charmin.  Elicts purrs

We have another flogger that has a bit of a bite to it. Even used with full force, it will not break the skin.

Enjoying being flogged at the San Francisco Street Faire

How any leather or wood implement feels is determined by factors that are never discussed.

How leather feels is determined by the tanning process, the chemicals used. The same animal hide can be processed to be soft or rigid.

I bought leather at Ren Faires. There was always a guy who had a bin of tanned leathers that I could pick through to find what I was looking for. Some shoe repair stores that do custom leather work, wallets, tack gear, etc, will have a small stock of leather.

We normally describe a wooden paddle as so long, so wide and so thick.  Such specifications are almost meaningless. Wood density is the primary factor that determines how it will feel. So WTF is wood density? Simply, it is how close together the cells are packed.

Here is a chart that shows the density for a few species. Balsa is 7-9. Pine is 22-35 (A wide range, as there are several species of Pine). Teak, one of the heavier woods, is 41-61. I assure you that a Teak paddle is all about thud. (Teak is excellent for marine use as the cells are densely packed, leaving little room for critters to move in and eat)

I have used Popular and Pine for paddles. The low density produces maximum sting and only a little thud.

Lignum vitae is one of the densest woods, with a rating of 79. It has a handsome grain. I have seen paddles made from it. I would describe them as clubs.

I have an Australian stock whip. I bought it to crack. I never had any intention of using it on human flesh.  It's for use from horseback to deal with the 145 venomous there. snakes. The fall is 10 feet. The handle is 20 inches. Sounds like a .44 when cracked.

My knowledge of bondage is equally limited. I would say that most of the things I have done in this area have been at the behest of my wife and a few playmates. It does nothing for me to restrain a woman. However, bondage does ring a bell for many women, and I am all about ringing bells.

That, my friends, is one way I am different. I give spankings they want. Not what I want.

I do enjoy telling a woman she can not move for the next ten licks.  Works very well on Bacall. "The next ten will be hard. You can not move." "Do I have to?" "Yes". Swoons [into submission that lasts for ten licks]

    1. Thanks, I hope that a few will take away that wood density and the tanning process define what a belt or paddle will feel like.

  2. All implements have their own distinct special feel.

We use leather, not wood, almost exclusively. A leather strap or riding crop is not really a whip.

Quirt and floggers have a whip like action. The floggers we’ve tried generally don’t have sufficient impact, or you have to swing them too hard to make them effective.

Our quirt delivers quite the sting. When Irene uses it there can be a backlash that hits her hand. The sting on my bottom can be delicious or too much.

Longer whips are too hard to control.

For these reasons we stick to riding crops and straps.

    1. Rosco, You missed the point of the article. In your case, all straps are not equal. Yours may look like another one, but that does not mean they are the same.

    2. I guess I see these things and my mind just rambles. The comparison of the kinds of wood - sting vs thud - resonates with me. All implements impart their own “flavor” as well as a degree of intensity.

    3. Speaking for Bacall and me, we only like sting, so we stay with the less dense woods. The dense woods will bruise deep muscles and can cause permanent injury. (Ask my friend Pam) That said, some like deep muscle bruising. We stay with the feels like a swarm of bees feeling.

  4. Mister Renard has left a new comment on your post "Paddles, Floggers and Whips":

Bonjour, ou peut-on trouver les matinets de couleur rouge et bleu ?

    1. Les fouets rouges et bleus ont été fabriqués sur mesure pour nous par une femme qui vivait en Virginie il y a vingt ans. Je regrette de ne pas savoir comment la contacter.

The red and blue floggers were custom-made for us by woman who lived in the state of Virginia two decades ago. I regret that I do not know how to contact her.

    1. Yes and it's an easy wood to work. Take it up to 600 grit, stain with a wide choice of colors and cover with several coats of poly.
