My knowledge of whips is limited. I showed pictures of two mean-looking whips. I have never seen such whips in real life. I imagine they would be worse on the bottom than a bunch of switches. I also showed two pictures of how bottoms might look after they were lightly used.

A multi-tailed implement, such as that pictured, over here is called a flogger or martinet (from the French for small whip). I have a large collection of various lengths and thicknesses of leather strands, plus one with horsehair and another with rubber cord. They are popular with the ladies here. Those with long strands need plenty of practice!
Martinet, yes, now I recall. I recall reading that they were generally available from shops like apothecaries. We had a small flogger with rubber cord. Ideal for pussy whipping.
I once used a single-tail whip (quirt) that was in the toy chest of a woman. She rode horses and bought it at a tack shop. She was eager for me to use it on her. How leather feels is determined by the tanning process, the chemicals used. The same animal hide can be processed to be soft or rigid.
I bought leather at Ren Faires. There was always a guy who had a bin of tanned leathers that I could pick through to find what I was looking for. Some shoe repair stores that do custom leather work, wallets, tack gear, etc, will have a small stock of leather.
We normally describe a wooden paddle as so long, so wide and so thick. Such specifications are almost meaningless. Wood density is the primary factor that determines how it will feel. So WTF is wood density? Simply, it is how close together the cells are packed.
Here is a chart that shows the density for a few species. Balsa is 7-9. Pine is 22-35 (A wide range, as there are several species of Pine). Teak, one of the heavier woods, is 41-61. I assure you that a Teak paddle is all about thud. (Teak is excellent for marine use as the cells are densely packed, leaving little room for critters to move in and eat)
Lignum vitae is one of the densest woods, with a rating of 79. It has a handsome grain. I have seen paddles made from it. I would describe them as clubs.
I have an Australian stock whip. I bought it to crack. I never had any intention of using it on human flesh. It's for use from horseback to deal with the 145 venomous there. snakes. The fall is 10 feet. The handle is 20 inches. Sounds like a .44 when cracked.

I made several paddles as gifts, like the one on the second from the right. I used Popular wood which is "light". I blindfolded my three "nieces" and paddled them several times with and without holes. It was, at best, a coin toss as to which paddle they thought I was using.
